Laos Tour - April 2011

Day 1: Chiang Rai (././.)


Welcome by your local guide at Chiang Rai Airport and transfer to your hotel.



Day 2: Chiang Rai - Houei Xai - Pakbeng (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

An early morning transfer to the the border crossing at Houei Xai. You are greeted by your local Lao guide and after completing the relevant paperwork for your entry into Laos, you begin your descent of one of the most famous rivers in the world: The Mekong. During your cruise, you have the opportunity to stop and meet the different people who live on the banks of the "Mother of Water".

You arrive in Pakbeng at the end of the day. This small town in the north of Laos is a commercial crossroads; goods pass between China, Myanmar, Thailand destined for the capital of Laos. You may see boats flying the flags of these countries.

Day 3: Pakbeng - Muang La Resort (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

After breakfast, you cross the Mekong, in a flat-bottomed boat, to go to an elephant camp on the opposite bank. You set off from the camp for an elephant trek through the Lao jungle and your trek of around 2 hours, gives you some stunning views over the Mekong. On your return to the camp, you can help the mahouts bathe their elephants.

Return to the hotel for lunch.

After lunch, you set off for Muang La Resort. After around 4½ hours (including comfort breaks), you reach the province of Oudom Xay. You are in the heart of northern Laos and the region is rich in picturesque mountain scenery and the diversity of the ethnic groups who live there. In the provincial capital, which bears the same name, you will see Chinese & Vietnamese merchants mixing with the local people as they buy & sell supplies. You continue on for 30km or so, to reach Muang La Resort. After checking-in, you have time to explores the Resort - you can relax in the hot-water spa fed with mineral rich water from a nearby geyser, take a traditional Lao sauna or enjpy a massage in the "sala" facing the river.

Day 4: Muang La (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

After breakfast, you leave for a pleasant stroll through the countryside surrounding the Resort. From lush, green rice fields to unspoiled forests, your trek of around 2-3 hours is a real opportunity to discover the fauna & flora surrounding the Resort.

Lunch at the Resort and free time in the afternoon to relax or enjoy the facilities at the Resort.

In the evening, you are invited to a Baci Ceremony in the village next to the Resort. In Laos, animist beliefs still persist and it is believed that we each have 32 souls or spirits (one for each part of the body). These souls (Khouanes in Lao) have the tendency to escape and risk being eaten by evil spirits causing illness and bad luck. It's important to recall these souls through the Baci Ceremony. The ceremony is followed by a traditional meal in one of the village homes accompanied by the local Lao cider - Lao Hay.

Day 5: Muang La (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

A day dedicated to meeting the ethnic groups of the region. You set off, around 08h30, following a mountain road which rises to 1,400m above sea level and offers some stunning views. After climbing to the high of the route, your hour long drive through incredible scenery brings you to a village or the Akkha people (also known as the Ikhos) who originate from Yunnan Province in China & Tibet. A stroll through the village called Ban Kok Mae Niae gives you the opportunity to meet the villagers and learn about their way of life following traditonal customs. You set off for the next village where you stop to enjoy your picnic lunch in the "village hall". After lunch, you continue on to another Ikhos village, Ban Ano, and learn more about their beliefs & customs: how the villagers dye their clothes using dyes made from the plants in the forest & their beliefs in the spirit world which govern their daily lives.

On your way back to Muang La Resort, you stop in a village of the "Blue Hmong" people who originate from the high steppes of Tibet. You learn about their customs and the importance they give to their livestock (buffalo, pigs...). You reach the Resort at the end of the day.

Day 6: Muang La - Nong Khiau - Luang Prabang (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

After breakfast you set off for Muang Khua by road. After around 2½ hours, you reach Muang Khua which is the start point of your cruise on the picturesque River Nam Ou which passes through some stunning scenery. (The private boat of Muang La Resort is the widest & most comfortable on the river and even has toliets on-board). This river cruise from Muang Khua to Nong Khiau is considered to one of the most beautiful in the region. From the comfort of your river boat, you discover numerous villages and breathtaking limestone cliffs which rise majestically on the banks of the river.

You stop for a picnic barbecue on one of the beaches along the river.

Your arrival in Nong Khiau is scheduled at the end of the afternoon and your air-conditioned minibus is waiting to take you to Luang Prabang.

Day 7: Luang Prabang (Breakfast/./.)

At first light (before breakfast) you witness the daily Alms Ceremony as Buddhist monks pass through the old part of the city receiving donations of rice & food from the local people. It's a truly amazing sight. After breakfast, your tour of Luang Prabang begins with the National Museum (housed in the former royal palace) defore you continue on to Wat May & Wat Manorom which is one of the oldest temples in Luang Prabang (it is believed to have been built in 1375 by King Sam Sen Thai). Your last stop before lunch is Wat That Louang which is the former crematorium for royal dignitaries.

Lunch (not included) is taken in one of the many local restaurants.

After lunch your tour continues with Wat Xieng Thong which sits at the northern end of the peninsula and is considered by many to be the most beautiful temple in Luang Prabang. As you pass from temple to temple (Wat Aphay, Wat Phraphouttabat - the temple of Buddha's footprint, Wat That - the monastery stupa, Wat Xieng Mouane & Wat Choum Khong - the lasr remaining examples of Xieng Khouang architecture), you witness the local people going about their daily lives. Your tour of Luang Prabang finishes with a climb to the top of Mount Phousi - the effort of climbing the 300 steps is rewarded by a magnificent view over the city and a stunning sunset.

Day 8: Luang Prabang - Kuang Si - Luang Prabang (Breakfast/Lunch/.)

Your day begins with a visit to the Ethnology Museum which houses many artefacts from the various ethnic groups of the region. Next you cross the Mekong to disocver the small village of Ban Xieng Maene, Wat Long Khoun (the Temple of Blessed Song) which houses an ornate carved wooden relief and Wat Chom Pet which sits on top of a hill overlooking the Mekong & Luang Prabang.

You return to Luang Prabang and leave the peninsula to go to the waterfalls at Kuang Si. You take a picnic lunch (prepared by the Elephant Restaurant) in the gardens around the falls. As well offering cooler temperatures, the falls are some of the most beautiful in Laos. It's a favourite place of the local people and families often come to benefit from the cooler temperatures during the hot season.

Return to Luang Prabang at the end of the afternoon.

Day 9: Luang Prabang (Breakfast/./.)

You have free time to relax or take one last stroll around the peninsula before your transfer to the airport.
